In Spring, bumps often appear as clay soil thaws unevenly. It can heave and create ripples in your lawn like a bunched-up carpet. Use your lawn leveling rake to thoroughly work the mixture into the grass. When you’re through, the leveling mixture should be under the grass. Plastic rakes are generally lighter weight and lower cost. Because they can be fabricated in widths of greater dimensions they are more suitable for leaves which have recently been deposited.
As a contractor and someone who has worked in a concrete plant you better know what type of snd you need for the job you are doing. Sand is either dug up in a quarry or dredged from a pond, lake or a sand quarry that they hit a spring in and filled with water. All commercial sand is washed so it can be graded for size and type.
Try taking a picture at a different time of day when light is shining on the house and step back a bit to show more of the yard. And a straight on shot of the front entry and walkway, using some fill flash if needed to light up the area under the roof. The large window is probably wood and can be painted. With all the other things you probably want to do in a new house, it may be best to invest in some landscaping and paint, and take your time to plan the rest. Sod University has another blog on leveling your lawn, but this addresses the need for leveling a lawn before installing new sod.
Leaf rakes are shaped the same as lawn rakes, with a long fan-shaped set of tines. The key difference is that rakes designed for raking up fallen leaves will be made from plastic, not metal like lawn rakes. In spite of being plastic, these rakes will be less flexible than lawn rakes, and therefore better suited to transporting light materials. Leaf rakes are essential if you yard leveling rake have trees around your yard or close to your property that drops their leaves in fall. Fallen leaves look messy and can also cause problems on the lawn, or become slippery and unsafe to walk on when compacted on sidewalks. A good-sized leaf rake will efficiently clear up leaves into easily manageable piles that can then be bagged up for collection or added to a compost pile.
When this happens, the lawn starts to move in awkward ways, creating the bumps and lawn holes that usually make yards look awful. The home and garden industry is estimated to be worth approximately 296 billion dollars. This means that homeowners are always searching for tools that can help them with improving their home. And many are more than willing to purchase gently used rakes.

If grass growth in the repaired areas was thin, apply a new layer of grass seed. Keep the area moist while the grass seed germinates and takes root. Replace the repaired areas with the removed sod or new sod, making sure the roots have good soil contact.
This is the stuff that gets stuck and sort of woven into your lawn. You may think this is just a part of your grass, but if you have a particularly thick and rough path of lawn, it is because of thatch. Coring aerators take 2 to 3-inch cores of grass and dirt from your lawn in order to aerate.
Check out my article on Soil Amendments for more info. I’m currently using a topdressing mix with equal parts of top soil, black peat, and mushroom compost. Adrian SAMPIERI no more than a half inch sand/soil mix.
But if it is a large hole, then you may need to pack it down with feet/shovel and make sure it’s level. Even though mixing this way can be an excellent idea, we still recommend using the exact type of soil in your yard. If you’re planting a particular species of grass or plants and you need a specific kind of soil for that – then choose accordingly. If you’re leveling a sandy soil, then using sand alone can do the job . This only works if you live in a pretty dry area where the terrain is more sand than it is soil.
Some rakes have wooden tines, usually made from bamboo. These tend not to be as durable or long-lasting as plastic rakes, but they are kinder to the environment. If you are looking for an eco-friendly rake, or enjoy using more traditional materials, then a wooden rake with a bamboo head could be right for you. Wooden handles are also common amongst various different types of rakes. These offer good grip and are gentler on the skin, being less likely to cause blisters than metal handles.
hole just above the handle to relieve pressure so the water flows freely. If you keep a few tools handy while you mow, you can deal with stray weeds as you notice them—no need to hunt for them later. Short sections of PVC pipe taped to the mower’s handle will hold tools and other necessities. I’ve seen St Augustine growing in untended sand dunes at Port Aransas and it looks fine. Organic matter just comes as the roots periodically die off.
However, it still won’t take as much work if having to repair a lawn resembling the cratered landscape of the moon. Using a wheelbarrow, create a top dressingsoil mixture that will support your turfgrass growth by mixing equal parts of compost, sand and topsoil. If you aren’t afraid of breaking a sweat and doing the work yourself, even a relatively major lawn-leveling job will save you some cash compared to hiring a professional.
Landscape rakes typically have relatively wide and flatheads. Their most common use is to level up and spread ground materials like sand and soil. In case you have work in larger areas, you can opt for the mechanized landscape rakes that can be attached to tractors.

Extremely uneven lawns can be dangerous, especially for children. They will have plastic heads that are angled so that they can scoop snow or other debris from off the roof. They also have extra long or extendable handles, so that the user can hold the rake at a good distance, allowing anything pulled down from the roof to fall far away from the user. Roof rakes are also good for removing a buildup of fallen leaves, and other debris that can mount up over time. These rakes are also known as pond rakes or algae rakes.
They are prone to rot if left outdoors, so they will need to be taken care of. I have a good number of high end Zoysia, hybrid Bermuda lawns. Top dress with .5 to .75″ of sand, soil, manure mix. Spread with shop brooms. If you have a thatch issue just deal with it. It’s a load of dead grass, not soil. Start regrading by removing soil from the high spots in the lawn. To create the new grade, you can redistribute the topsoil you removed or add topsoil from another source.
This ensured that the rake did not become clogged with debris and eliminated the need for the user to remove the debris from the tool by hand. Long days raking, especially when the weather is poor, can result in you losing your grip on your rake. This makes it easy to switch between raking and other yard work without having to deal with putting on gloves or drying off your hands. Non-slip grips are also very popular on roof rakes, as you will be out in the snow or rain in such situations and do not want to lose control of the rake. While they will be heavier than other types of rakes, those with steel handles are going to do a great job standing up to the elements. They are rust-resistant and will continue to look amazing for a long time after their purchase.
The Magnum Line of tools are exclusively from Standard Golf. Their calling card is their strength and longevity. You can see these on all of their heads as we connect the heads to the handles with a twist and gusset bracing. This process helps to eliminate head-to-handle wobble. Our delivery program lets you get the qualifying items delivered from the store to your door by a helpful Ace associate. This works great for dragging and smoothing a gravel driveway as well. Using a box blade or a rake will create ridges at the edges of the implement, box blade probably worse than the rake. I’d say you need a drag harrow, land plane or something like that to smooth it out for a lawn. The box blade would get a rough leveling and filling in any big low spots.
Finally, if your lawn looks like the surface of the moon, you likely need to resort to more extreme measures. Topdressing or the sod cutting method will likely not be sufficient to solve the problem. You may need to regrade the area and establish a new lawn. This was the case for me in my backyard, as you can see from the pictures. Part of the yard was sloping towards the house and half of the yard was too steep to be usable.
Personally, I think Craftsman is an uneasy thing to bring to a split level unless you are will to spend big bucks, and even then it can look awkward and not quite right. If you are willing to spend the money, I think Houssaon suggestion to extend the roofline over the addition is the best way to go. Maybe you can save that project for when it is time to reroof. It is worth getting a professional involved, especially a professional landscape architect or designer, and post more and better pictures here for more feedback.
The vigorous growth seasons in the spring and summer offer the best opportunities for filling low sections of lawn. In preparation for leveling, check the water level of your soil. If the soil is dry or hard, water deeply a few days before you begin your project. You will want to have moist, not wet and heavy, soil for easy leveling.
It’s the grass that should be above the dirt, not vice versa. If you’re facing small, less-than-one-inch bumps, practice stepping on them when the soil is at its softest. For an even better effect, use a water-filled garden roller to smooth out the surface of your yard. Avoid overdoing it, for it may lead to other frustrating lawn problems. Running or walking across all those lumps and bumps can be dangerous, especially for kids. Delve into the reasons for the lumps and then learn how to level a yard to avoid potential injuries.
